Abstract

Flood phenomena, intensified by regional and global climate change, are increasingly recurrent and devastating events. Extreme cases such as those in 2010 and 2013 on the island of Madeira corroborate this indicator. The regions most affected are those with the highest urban index and the most significant soil waterproofing, such as Machico. Therefore, based on the recent history of floods in the city of Machico and the aid of georeferencing tools such as ArcGIS, the geomorphological and hydrological analysis of the hydrographic basin of the Machico stream will be carried out in order to verify the expected flow rate for a recurrence period of 100 years, through the Gumbel Probabilistic Distribution. Subsequently, the river mouth's flow capacity will be analyzed using the Manning-Strickler equation, where the minimum roughness coefficient necessary to allow the flow of the expected high peak flow will be evaluated. Finally, the results suggest that the river’s mouth does not have the capacity to drain the precipitated flow, requiring changes in the bed roughness coefficient.

Author Biography

Sérgio António Neves Lousada, University of Madeira

Sérgio António Neves Lousada is a Civil Engineer with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, area of knowledge in Hydraulics. He teaches at the University of Madeira, Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering in Civil Engineering course, major field of Hydraulics, Environment and Water Resources and secondary area of Construction. Since 2012, he has conducted research in Hydraulic sciences, particularly in Hydraulics, Urban Hydraulics and Marine and Fluvial Construction, together with monitoring activities in these areas, as well as involvement in teaching, European rules, national associations and also the provision of specialized services to the community. He has published some articles, books and participated in events mainly in the areas of Hydraulics, Urban Planning and Land Management. Furthermore, he collaborates with the Environmental Resources Analysis Research Group (ARAM) - University of Extremadura (UEx); VALORIZA - Research Center for the Enhancement of Endogenous Resources, Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (IPP), Portugal; CITUR - Madeira - Centre for Tourism Research, Development and Innovation, Madeira, Portugal; and RISCO — Civil Engineering Department of University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal. Moreover, he holds an International Master's Degree in Ports and Coasts Engineering.
